Fine early Mendi or Wola People’s Archer’s Shield (Eláyaborr), Papua New Guinea. Carved and engraved hardwood and natural pigment. Mendi Valley Area, Southern Highlands Archer’s shoulder shield. Papua New Guinea. With an almost identical figure to the war shield published in Shields of Melanesia on page 133, this archer’s shoulder shield is likely to be made by the Wola people on the Nembi Plateu in the Southern Highlands of PNG. This shield has a painted figure in white contrasting to the blackened shield with holes for suspension by fibre cord. Approx L71.5 x 35cm. PROVENANCE Ex Stan Moriarty Collection, Sydney.
