Presentation Fijian Whale Tooth Pendant Necklace (Tabua) Fiji islands. Carved sperm whale tooth and coconut fibre. Large polished sperm whale tooth drilled at either end with attached braided fibre neck lanyard. Tabua were traditionally given as gifts for atonement or esteem, and were important in negotiations between rival chiefs. Originally available only from beached whales, and from trade with Tonga, until the early 19th century when trade gave the native Fijians access to thousands of whales teeth. Approx L15cm. PROVENANCE John Magers Collection, Sydney.
